Software Engineer · Population Health · Bangalore
5 July 2021 to 18 August 2023
At Oracle Health, formerly Cerner, I worked on the software and data pipelines behind population-health reporting, where patient records and laboratory data needed to become reliable analytics and standardised reports for healthcare providers and payers.
Patient data and reporting
- I engineered pipelines ingesting EHR and laboratory data for millions of patients across hundreds of US healthcare systems, producing standardised reports that supported the requirements of the US Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
- I built analytics workflows for patient cohort trends, chronic disease prevalence, and care gaps, with results feeding dashboards and CMS quality reports, so providers could examine patterns across a population as well as individual records.
Testing and performance
- I built a Python and pytest test-automation pipeline covering unit, integration, and black-box testing across the population-health platform, which helped validate CMS-compliant workflows and reduce regression risk between releases.
- I achieved a 90% reduction in pipeline processing time, from days to under one day, through query optimisation, partitioning strategies, and distributed restructuring, working across the stages of the pipeline rather than changing only the final reporting step.
Workflow automation and delivery
- I built automated client data workflows using Apache Airflow and PySpark and maintained the React interface used to configure and trigger them, improving report-generation reliability while reducing manual intervention in production.
- I delivered features using Python, Oracle SQL, Java, Git, and Jenkins, working in agile sprint cycles tracked through Jira.
- I resolved escalated client issues in production and documented each fix in legally reviewed change notes, so the delivery included a record of the change alongside the implementation.
Team responsibilities
- While the team was short-handed, I co-led the annual CMS update with colleagues over two to three months, alongside the team’s development and support work.
- I trained junior engineers as an official part of my role, helping them learn the systems they would work on.
Tools and skills
| Area | Tools and methods |
|---|---|
| Data engineering | Oracle SQL, PySpark, query optimisation, partitioning, distributed processing |
| Workflow automation | Apache Airflow, React |
| Test engineering | Python, pytest, unit testing, integration testing, black-box testing |
| Software delivery | Java, Git, Jenkins, Jira, agile sprint delivery |
| Healthcare reporting | EHR and laboratory data, population-health analytics, CMS quality reporting |
| Team and operations | Production support, change documentation, annual updates, junior-engineer training |
This role gave me experience of maintaining systems that healthcare clients were already using, while learning how data processing, testing, reporting requirements, and production support depend on one another.
